Forehead and Chin Options/Icons in the Work Panel

3 min read

Introduction #

Each subpanel inside the Work panel—Spaces, Boards, and Items—is framed by two rows: the Forehead at the top and the Chin at the bottom. These rows host essential controls and information that help Organization Owners and Workspace Admins manage work more efficiently. While the Forehead and Chin are largely similar across all three subpanels, the Items subpanel includes a few additional controls tailored for task-level management.

📍 Location #

To find the Forehead and Chin, open the Work panel from the navigation sidebar. The Work panel contains three subpanels—Spaces (left), Boards (middle), and Items (right). In each subpanel, the Forehead is the top row, and the Chin is the bottom row. Together, they frame the subpanels with quick access to actions, information, and settings.

🎯 Why This Feature Matters #

The Forehead and Chin rows provide direct access to workspace management tools without navigating away from the Work panel. They solve three key problems for Org Owners and Admins:

  • Quick creation: Add new groups and manage structures instantly from the forehead.
  • Centralized visibility: View members, effort, and context for the selected Space, Board, or Item in the chin.
  • Action shortcuts: Open notes, conversations, dashboards, or exports with one click.

These controls keep workspace management smooth, ensuring leaders can act without disrupting their workflow.

👤 Who Should Read This #

This feature is particularly relevant for:

  • Organization Owners: To oversee and control all aspects of the workspace.
  • Workspace Admins: To manage groups, memberships, and reports within the Work panel.

Members and Observers can see the Forehead and Chin but cannot use the icons. This ensures sensitive actions remain restricted to leadership roles.

📝 What This Guide Covers #

This guide explains:

  • The purpose of the Forehead and Chin rows in the Work panel.
  • The common icons and options shared across Spaces, Boards, and Items.
  • The additional forehead controls available in the Items subpanel.

By the end, you’ll know how to navigate and use the forehead and chin features across all subpanels.

📄 Feature Overview #

The Forehead (top row) contains icons and indicators for creating groups, opening notes, conversations, and exporting reports. The Chin (bottom row) displays contextual information such as members, effort, and membership management.

These functions remain consistent across Spaces, Boards, and Items, with only slight variations in the Items subpanel.

Forehead Controls (Shared Across Spaces, Boards, and Items) #

The forehead has the following controls common across the three sub-panels:

  1. + icon: Create a new Group (Space Group, Board Group, or Item Group depending on the subpanel).
  2. Notes icon: Access notes for the selected object.
  3. Conversation icon: Open the conversation for the selected object.
  4. > symbol: Indicates when an object (Space, Board, or Item) is selected.
  5. Selected object name: Displays the name of the Space, Board, or Item currently in focus.
  6. Kanban icon: Present but currently not clickable.
  7. More Options (hamburger icon): Opens a menu with the option Export CSV, which generates a complete report of the workspace.

This maintains uniformity in the layout and design on the three sub-panels, creating a more consistent experience.

Additional Forehead Controls in the Items Subpanel #

The Items subpanel forehead includes two extra controls:

  1. Dashboard icon: Appears before the Kanban icon. Opens the Board Dashboard, a visual representation of the flow of work in the selected Board through all its Item Groups.
  2. Detail Mode (in More Options): In addition to Export CSV, the Options menu includes Detail Mode, a toggle that changes the Items subpanel view from normal to detailed. The detailed view shows extra information on each item tile, such as open/closed status, assigner and assignee avatars, and logged effort.

The options are vital to view the flow of work through the Item Groups in a Board and enable quick assignment.

Chin Options (Shared Across Spaces, Boards, and Items) #

The following are options and icons common in all three sub-panels:

  1. Tags icon (left side): Shows the tooltip “Tags coming soon” as the feature is not yet active.
  2. Selected object name: Displays the name of the current Space, Board, or Item.
  3. Member avatars: Shows the members assigned to the object.
  4. Cumulative effort spent: Displays the total effort logged in that object.
  5. Membership icon: Opens the membership pane on the right side of the screen, where members can be added or removed.

The chin functions the same way in Spaces, Boards, and Items to provide the user a seamless view of work.

💡 Key Benefits
The Forehead and Chin rows streamline workspace management in several ways:

  • Efficiency: Add groups, export data, and manage members without leaving the subpanel.
  • Visibility: See effort and membership data at a glance.
  • Scalability: Use dashboards and detailed views in Items to manage large volumes of tasks effectively.

These benefits ensure Org Owners and Admins can maintain control of their workspace while keeping operations transparent and organized.
